Quick answer

Horse Riding in the Dubai Desert — what this package actually is

This is the alternative-mount product on the camel ride landing page. Instead of a working camel, the mount is a trained Arabian-style horse with an English-style saddle, ridden across open desert sand. A trained handler escorts the rider throughout the route — typically walking alongside or riding a sister horse depending on the group size and rider confidence. The mood is calmer than dune-bashing, more active than the slow camel walk: a meditative ride at horse-walking and horse-trot pace across firm desert ground.

This package is priced higher than the camel ride (AED 575 vs AED 150) because the operational cost is meaningfully different: trained horses, dedicated handlers, English-tack maintenance, helmet stock, and a smaller-volume booking pattern. The horse partner runs welfare-rotated mounts on the same shift discipline as our camel partner — see the welfare callout below.

Mount, route and rider expectations

The horses are Arabian-influenced, trained for tourism use, and habituated to desert walking and slow trotting. Saddle is English-style — a flatter seat than a Western saddle, with stirrups and a single rein in the rider's hands. The handler walks alongside on foot for first-time riders or leads a sister horse for confident riders. The rider's hands stay on the rein; the handler controls the pace verbally and can take the lead rope at any moment if the rider asks.

Route runs across open desert sand near the Lahbab area — flat, firm sand for the most part with one or two gentle dune-edge transitions. Total ride distance is around 1–2 km depending on rider confidence and horse mood. The pace is mostly walking; a short trot section is offered to confident riders if conditions allow. We do not run gallops on this product — the route is built for confidence and photography, not racing.

A photo stop is built into the route — the handler pauses the horse at a flat sand-bowl for photographs. Bring a chest or wrist strap for any camera; dropping anything from horseback is not graceful.

Pre-ride flow

Seven steps from arrival to drop-off.

  1. Arrive at the briefing area. Handler greets you and matches you with the right horse for your stated experience.
  2. Helmet issued (mandatory for first-time riders, optional for confident riders but recommended).
  3. Mounting block or handler-assisted mount — trained horse stands still during boarding.
  4. Brief tutorial on rein, stirrups and posture (5–8 minutes).
  5. Walk segment with the handler alongside on foot. Photo stop on a flat sand-bowl.
  6. Optional short trot section for confident riders. Handler decides based on horse mood and conditions.
  7. Walk back to the briefing area. Dismount; horse rotates to rest per welfare schedule.

Rider confidence, age and medical

First-time riders are welcome on this product — the handler walks alongside on foot, the horse is trained for tourism, and the route is mostly walking pace. The brief tutorial on rein, stirrups and posture is enough to ride safely. If you are nervous or have never been on a horse, tell us at booking; the handler keeps the lead rope throughout for guaranteed control.

Confident riders with prior English-saddle experience can ask for the optional short trot section. The handler decides based on horse mood and conditions — not every shift permits the trot. Do not expect a gallop; this is a tourism product, not a riding lesson.

Age and medical — minimum age 12 with adult consent, 16+ ride independently. Pregnancy (any trimester) and recent back / pelvic / spine surgery should skip horse riding entirely. The walk is gentle but the trot — even a short trot — applies measurable spine compression. See /safety-certifications/.

Best season and best time of day

October to April for the best ride feel and the cooler ground temperature for the horse. Sunset October–February delivers the strongest light for photography. November and December weekend sunset slots book up 5–7 days ahead — message early.

Summer (June–August): sunrise and sunset only. The horse partner pauses mid-day operations entirely in July and most of August because surface temperature on open desert sand is unsafe for the animal even with reduced ride duration.

Pricing transparency

AED 575 per person — same rate every channel. The price reflects the higher operational cost of the trained-horse partner: smaller mount pool, dedicated handlers, English-tack maintenance, helmet stock and welfare-rotated rest schedule. The standalone rate does not include hotel pickup; arrange transfer separately or message us about combining the booking with an evening safari.

Group rates available from four riders booked together — useful for friend groups or hen-party bookings looking for a different mount than the standard camel ride. Long-format private rides (90 min, sole-use horse, dedicated handler) are quoted separately. See /pricing/.

Common booking mistakes

  • Picking horse riding when you actually wanted the slow camel ride — different product, different price
  • Booking sunset for the middle of the day — sunset is sunset
  • Wearing flip-flops or open shoes — closed shoes mandatory; the stirrup will not hold an open shoe safely
  • Booking with a recent back or pelvic surgery — this product is not appropriate; the morning camel ride is safer
  • Asking for a gallop — this is a tourism product, not a riding lesson; gallops are not part of any tier

For confident riders, photographers and alternative-mount seekers

Confident English-saddle riders — book the standard 15–25 min product first to feel out the mount and route, then upgrade to a long-format private ride on a return visit if the partner has availability.

Photographers — horseback photography on Dubai desert sand at golden hour is meaningfully different from camel photography. The hoof-on-sand close-up, the rider profile against the dune horizon, and the trot motion shot are the strongest single frames. Sunset October–February for the warmest light.

Alternative-mount seekers — guests who already did a camel ride on a previous Dubai visit, or who genuinely prefer horses to camels, are the natural audience for this product. The price reflects the operational reality, not a luxury markup.
